A lively crowd of 700 fans gathered to Pro-Wrestling CRIMSON’s home of the Miyako 1000 Tokuji Gymnasium to witness the first night of the 2008 Power Source tournament. In the main event, it was the two former tag team partners of Keiji Hirano and Izumo Yoritomo who headlined the event in singles competition. Yoritomo controlled the early portions of the match with his sheer power, as Hirano increasingly simply tried to hold on for dear life. Despite Yoritomo’s clear advantage in a one on one situation, the X factor proved to be not Hirano’s skills, but his Captain who came to the ring with Hirano: Akuma Toyota, who blindsided Yoritomo with a chair shot while the referee was distracted. Hirano capitalized with a springboard dropkick, and followed it up with a beautiful Moonsault Press to steal the two points! Yoritomo looked absolutely enraged but there was little he could do at this robbery…
The two former amateur rivals clashed in the semi final, as the steadily riding Takayuki Ariwa took on the once upon a time “Super Rookie” of Kenjiro Amagawa in a back and forth match. Amagawa countered Ariwa’s sheer intensity and power by setting a controlled workman like pace throughout the match using his technique to control Ariwa...Ariwa continually looked for that one shot kill on Amagawa, but Amagawa showed how far he’s progressed by deftly avoiding all his moves, not once letting Ariwa use the Angelos or Hammerfall…Amagawa targeted Ariwa’s knee and had him trapped in his Figure Four Leglock, however, Amagawa’s own pace came back to work against him as time expired before Ariwa could submit tot the hold, giving both men one point!
Ariwa’s friend and partner fought in the tournament match right below that, as Hiroyuki Takano took on the Backdrop Brother of Mikio Tsuruya. Tsuruya is primarily a tag team wrestler, while Takano is a singles wrestler who is adapting to tag team work…and that became obvious here, as Tsuruya struggled mightily with Takano’s speed and ability throughout the match, but couldn’t stop Takano from landing the Takano Driver for the three count and two points!
The “tank” of Eisaku Shimura took on the “Texas Outlaw” Jake Bishop in the third tournament match of the night…Shimura’s sheer power and defense proved to be a problem for Bishop, however, it was Shimura’s lack of offensive power proved to be his downfall. He could take Bishop’s attacks, but he couldn’t fight back well…Bishop eventually was able to crack Shimura’s armor with the Texan Bomber for the three count victory and the two points.
NGI and the BLACKHEARTS clashed in the second tournament match of the night as Toshiro Noguchi took on Rui Kuriyama…Kuriyama tried every tactic he could think of, raking the eyes, low blows, and even a weapon attack, but he was so over matched against Noguchi that there was little he could do to stop Noguchi from landing the Thunder Hammer for the three count.
It was overall a great night for NGI in the tournament, but there was one worrying sign…Nobuyori Shimizu took on Shuji Kawashima in the first tournament match of the night, and Shimizu easily dispatched the former track star with the “Tsuyosa” German Suplex…However, Shimizu’s right arm was bandaged in such as way that many fans recalled last year’s tournament with horror.
Three non-tournament matches were always held. In the opening match of the night the oddball team of Millennium S.K. and Hiroshi Kuroki teamed up to take on Akahito Yamada and Natsuo Sakoda…Despite the oddity of their team, S.K. and Kuroki were able to pull it out, as S.K. showed how determined he is now by pinning Yamada with the Millennium Driver.
The second non-tournament match say Naoki Daishi return to his heel roots as he found himself teamed with MILLENNIUM STARS members Ryoma Inoue and SLAYER in a winning effort against Hayato Saigo, Keoni Murata, and HANZO. Daishi fit in perfectly with this partners, and showed off heel mannerisms before SLAYER nearly decapitated HANZO with the Zanzai Lariat.
The final non tournament match saw Yuki Nomura lead HEROICS members Royama the Brave and DRAGON Takagi into a winning effort over Goro Iijima, Daisuke Yamazaki, and Ichiyo Tatsuko. Tatsuko proved to be the ultimate weaklink of the match as Royama pinned him with a German Suplex Hold.
